Firebirds Fall in First-Ever Contest at Daemen

AMHERST, NY – Sophomore forward Clenso Brannon III and sophomore guard Omar Abbas scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, but the University of the District of Columbia suffered a 97-42 loss in its first ever meeting with East Coast Conference newcomer, Daemen on Sunday afternoon.

UDC has now lost three of its last four games and fell to 3-9 overall and 1-5 in league play. Daemen, meanwhile, has now won four of its last five games and improved to 8-6 overall and 5-3 in its inaugural season in the ECC.

Early on, freshman guard Kevin Campbell (Biology – Washington, DC/Woodrow Wilson HS) helped the Firebirds keep pace, scoring four of his eight points for the day in the first seven minutes of play. His second jumper of the afternoon made it 10-8, Daemen at the 13:40 mark, but the Wildcats went on to out-score UDC 41-9 the remainder of the first half to take a commanding 51-17 lead at halftime. Daemen went on to out-score UDC, 46-25 in the second half and won by a sizeable margin.

The Wildcats had four double-figure scorers, including forward Gerald Beverly's game-high 19 points. Uchechi Ogbonna led Daemen with nine rebounds while also scoring nine points. Daemen had 12 players enter the scoring column as the Wildcats shot 52-percent from the field as a team.

UDC returns to the nation's capital to host ECC foe Molloy on Wednesday, January 15th at 5 p.m.
