Updating the Firebirds

District of Columbia snapped a nine-game losing streak at home on Wednesday night last with a 75-72 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas last week but went on to lose at league-leading LIU Post, 84-73. There were some positives to be taken from that loss to the Pioneers though as the Firebirds went on a 14-4 run to start the second half and closed a 17-point halftime gap to just seven in the first five minutes of the closing frame. They also closed the game out on a 15-2 run. Junior transfer guard Michael Terry (Criminal Justice – Philadelphia, PA/Boston U) led District of Columbia with team-highs of 21 points and five rebounds while senior transfer forward D'Angelo Johnson (Mass Media – Washington, DC/Virginia St.) and junior transfer point guard Quasim Jones (Business Management – Philadelphia, PA/Johnson CC) added 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Firebirds out-shot LIU Post considerably, 48-percent to 39-percent from the field and three-point shooting was virtually even. District of Columbia was also a more efficient team with 15 assists and just 12 turnovers compared to LIU Post's 17 assists and 22 turnovers. The Firebirds are the least turnover-prone team in the league with an average of just 12.5 per-game.

Scouting Dowling

The Golden Lions snapped a three-game losing slide and earned their first win of the new year as they beat ECC newcomer Roberts Wesleyan, 76-58 on the road Saturday afternoon. Their senior guard Josh Malone led the way with a game-high 19 points. Malone is the team's leading scorer with a season average of 13.6 points per-game. Malone's fellow backcourt mates, Corwin Austin and Darien Davis also both average in double-figures with 11.4 and 10.7 points per-game, respectively. As a team, however, the Golden Lions are dead last in scoring offense with just under 64 points per-game. Their defense, on the other hand, is ranked 2nd in the league and allows just 64 points per-game.

The Mathcup

Wednesday night's game pits the league's worst offense (Dowling) vs. the league's worst defense (District of Columbia). These are also the two worst rebounding teams in the league, with Dowling ranking 9th and District of Columbia coming in last. Both teams are 1-4 in league play and hoping to turn its season around with a victory. The Firebirds, who are 0-9 when playing away from the nation's capital, seek their first road win of the year as well. After this game, seven of their final 12 games are at home.
