GAME NOTES: No. 22 University of the District of Columbia Men’s Basketball vs. NYIT

WASHINGTON, DC  –  The No. 22 University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team squares off against East Coast Conference foe NYIT on Wednesday, January 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the UDC Gym. There will be a live video webcast of the game with play-by-play announcing by Eli Pearlstein via www.udcfirebirds.com.

The Firebirds (12-1, 3-0 ECC) look to extend their 10-game overall win streak and their 12-game win streak at home – both currently rank the longest in the East Region. They most recently earned a hard-fought 71-68 overtime victory on the road at Dowling on Saturday to stay perfect in league play. Brandon Herbert (Baltimore, MD – McDonough HS) led all scorers with 21 points, including four big free-throws in the overtime session to lead UDC to victory.

Herbert has scored over 20 points in five straight games while making 40-percent of his shots from the field, 48-percent from three-point range and 91-percent from the foul line. Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, MD – St. Frances Academy) also showed he can be yet another scoring force for the Firebirds from the guard position as he erupted for a season-high 31 points in UDC's win over Washington Adventist last week. The Firebirds also feature Nigel Munson (Washington, DC – DeMatha HS) who ranks 33rd in Division II for scoring and 8th in assists (as of Jan. 5).

The Bears (4-8, 1-2 ECC), meanwhile, have lost three of their last five games, including a narrow 70-67 defeat at Molloy their last time out on Saturday. NYIT has three scorers averaging in double-figures, including team-leader Kayvon Roberts (15.5 ppg). Azel Prather, Jr. averages 9.9 points and a team-best 7.8 rebounds per-game.

This game marks the second meeting between these two programs as NYIT bested UDC in Old Westbury, NY in overtime, 78-73 in what was third-year head coach Jeff Ruland's debut on the Firebirds sideline on November 15, 2009. Then just a sophomore, Munson (16 points) led a furious Firebird comeback as UDC erased a 16-point deficit to tie the game at the end of regulation and force overtime. A young UDC squad would ultimately get outscored in the overtime session as they dropped a five-point decision. NYIT's Roberts, a freshman at the time, led the Bears with 12 points and nine rebounds.
