UDC Men’s Basketball Hosts Crosstown Rival Washington Adventist in Final Non-Conference Game

WASHINGTON, DC  –  The University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team hosts its last non-conference game of the season against crosstown rival Washington Adventist University on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Firebirds (10-1) look to continue their current eight-game win streak while also extending their home win streak to 12. With a 74-63 win over Dominican last Friday, the Firebirds completed a perfect 11-0 record at the UDC Gym in the 2011 calendar year. That home winning streak began with a UDC victory over WAU on Jan. 5, 2011. The Firebirds also won the next meeting between these two schools on Dec. 3, 2011 at Takoma Park. Senior guard Nigel Munson (Washington, DC – DeMatha HS) led all scorers with 32 points, seven assists and five rebounds as UDC earned a 104-86 road victory. Munson was one of five Firebirds to score in double-figures as the team registered their highest point total of the season that night.

Thus far, UDC is 8-1 in non-conference play this season, with its only loss coming to Division I Duquesne. The Firebirds are led by senior guards Munson and Brandon Herbert (Baltimore, MD – McDonough HS), who both average around 20 points per-game. Herbert is coming off a stellar shooting performance in UDC's last outing, as he knocked down seven three-point field goals en-route to a 25-point scoring day. Munson also notched 20 points to go with seven assists, as he still remains 7th in Division II for assists per-game (6.7).

Meanwhile, WAU is led by its senior swingman Marcus Coleman (21.2 ppg, 9.1 rpg) and senior guard Jamie Newton (20.4 ppg, 5.3 assist per-game). The Shock have won three of their last four, including a thrilling 72-70 victory over Wilmington University in their last outing thanks to a buzzer-beating layup by Newton at the end of regulation. Newton finished with 13 points and 12 assists in that game while Coleman posted 25 points and four rebounds to lead the Shock to the win.
