UDC Firebirds Stun Pfeiffer with 94-90 Win

Meisenheimer, NC: January 12, 2011-- In an exciting, down to the wire contest, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team defeated the Pfeiffer University Falcons, 94-90, tonight at Merner Gymnasium in Meisenheimer, North Carolina. With this win the Firebirds improved to 3-11 for the season while Pfeiffer fell to 6-6.

The Firebirds led by 5 at the break, 41-36, but the Falcons clawed their way back to outscore them, 54-53, in the second half, narrowing the lead to 1 before junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology-Baltimore, MD) converted three free-throws in the final 10 seconds to help seal the win. Although the score was close at the end, the Firebirds led most of the game and led by 13 points in the first half.

Four Firebirds scored in double figures tonight, including Herbert, who had 19 points along with junior guard Nigel Munson (Graphic Design-Washington, DC), who also tallied 19 points and dished out 8 assist along with 2 blocks and 2 steals. Sophomore guard Keith Brooks (Mass Media-Harlem, NY) scored 15 points and senior guard Tim Ellison added 11 points.

The Firebirds shot 50 percent (15-30) from the field in the first half and 52 percent (34-65) for the game. They shot 43 percent (9-21) from beyond the arc and a healthy 77 percent (17-22) from the charity stripe.  Pfeiffer shot 24 percent (4-17) from three-point range and 71 percent (30-42) from the charity stripe.

Although Pfeiffer were able to hold a rebounding edge  38-28, UDC's pressure defense caused 21 turnovers,  they capitalized on this by converting 21 of them into 28 points.  UDC also made 9 of 21 three-pointers.

Five Falcon's scored in double figures, led by Chris Woods with a game-high 29 points. He was followed by Reggie Hollinger with 15 and Davon Gilliard and Vonte Eaford with 13 apiece,  Josh Humphrey added 11 points.

The Firebirds next game will be Saturday, January 15, at home against the Central State University Marauders, at 2 p.m.
