Alderson-Broaddus Rallies to Defeat UDC, 80-77

Washington, DC: December 30, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team fell just short of a win this afternoon, losing to the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers, 80-77, in an exciting contest at the UDC Sports Complex in Washington, DC. The Firebirds took a 37-31 lead into the halftime break but the Battlers regained the lead in the second half.  The lead changed hands several times in the second half before Tim Ellison (TV Broadcasting-Alexandria, VA) missed a long 3 point shot as the buzzer sounded in a hard fought contest.

Junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology-Baltimore, MD) led the Firebirds scoring with a 20 point, 2 rebound and 3 assist performance. Joining Herbert in double figures were junior guard Nigel Munson (Graphic Design-Washington, DC), sophomore forward Dyrek Jones (Accounting-Brooklyn, NY) with his first career double-double performance of 11 points and 11 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were freshman guard Philip Izevbehai (Mass Media-Long Island, NY) with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2steals, and senior guard Tim Ellison (TV Broadcasting-Alexandria, VA) with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist.

The Firebirds shot 45 percent (26-58) from the field for the game, 35 percent (7-20) from beyond the arc and 64 percent (18-28) from the charity stripe, while the Battlers shot 42 percent (28-66) from the field, 46 percent (10-22) from three-point range and 67 percent ( 14-21) from the charity stripe.

Nate Barnes scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Battlers to the win. Three other Battlers scored in double figures including, Cory Neale and Carl Buck with 13 points apiece, followed by Roy Brown with 12 points.

The Battlers controlled the boards, pulling down 42 to the Firebird's 37. UDC turnovers proved costly as the Battlers converted 5 of 6 of them into 11 points, while UDC only scored 5 points off turnovers. The Firebirds bench outscored the Battler bench 17-16.

The Firebirds (1-9) return to action Monday, January 3, at 1:30 p.m., against the Elizabeth City State University Vikings at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina.
