UDC Drops One to Bloomfield College, 95-90

Bloomfield, NJ: November 17, 2010-- The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team fell to 0-3 following a, 95-90, loss tonight to the Bloomfield College Deacons in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Junior guard Brandon Herbert (Sociology-Baltimore, MD) scored a game-high 26 points, grabbed 4 rebounds, and made 2 assists in the game for the Firebirds.

The Firebirds had a total of 3 players in double figures, also joining the double figures club were freshman guard Philip Izevbehai (Mass Media-Long Island, NY) with 21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Senior forward Greg Avila(Sociology-Bronx, NY) contributed 16 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal to the Firebirds scoring effort.

UDC trailed Bloomfield the entire game, including by a 23 point deficit with 14:32 remaining in the game before mounting a furious comeback with a 24-13 run to cut the lead to 9 with 6:48 remaining. The Firebirds were able to get within 4 points with .04 seconds remaining before falling.

UDC's bench outscored Bloomfield's 20-15, and we managed to score 16 pts off of turnovers as Bloomfield scored 24 pts from UDC's turnovers. Our opponent put 12 pts on the boards from offensive rebounding and we had 3 second chance points.

Four Bloomfield players reached double figures, led by Matt Wafula with 24 points, and 6 rebounds. Gage Daye followed with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists and 3 steals. Ryan Rodrigues added 17 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and Mike Williams contributed 12 points, 2 rebounds. 2 assists, 1 block and 2 steals.

UDC shot well, 52 percent (32-62) for the game, 53 percent (10-19) from three-point range and 67 percent (16-24) from the charity stripe, while Bloomfield shot 44 percent (32-72) from the field, 24 percent (4-17) from beyond the arc and 70 percent (27-39) in free- throws.

UDC will play again on November 20, 6 p.m., at home during UDC's Homecoming Week festivities.
