UDC Men Fall to USP, 72-57

 Washington, DC: February 18, 2010-Curtis Fitch and Omari Phillips each scored 19 points to pace the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia Devils to a, 72-57, win over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds at the UDC Sports complex tonight.

USP opened the game with a 10-0 run to establish a lead that they would not relinquish as they went on to broaden it to as much as 16 in the first half.  UDC got on the board at 16: 27 of the half when freshman guard Keith Brooks (Harlem NY) drained a 3-pointer. Brooks scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the first half.

UDC shot 40 percent (23-47) from the field in the half to USP's 54 percent (27-50). UPS led 35-21 at the break.

UPS maintained their 54 percent field goal shooting in the second half , using a combination of 3-point shots  and 73 percent (8-11) shooting from the charity stripe to maintain their momentum and take the win as UDC improved their scoring to end the half with 1 point less than USP (37-36). It would not be enough as USP maintained their lead to finish ahead of the Firebirds by 15 points, shooting 54 percent (27-50) from the field for the game, 44 percent (10-23) from beyond the arc and 73 percent (8-11) from the charity stripe. UDC shot 40 percent (23-57) from the field, 37 percent (6-16) from 3-point range and 46 percent (5-11) from the charity stripe.

Four USP players were in double digits tonight, including Fitch and Phillips. William Kernan scored 12 points, collected 5 rebounds, and made 6 assists and 2 steals, while Adewale Adefemi added 11 points, 9 boards, 4 assists and 1 steal.

In addition to his game-high 26 points, Brooks pulled down 5 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and made 1 steal. Sophomore forward Chris Leach (Washington, DC) followed with 10 points, 9 boards, 1 assist and 2 steals as they only other UDC player in double figures.  Junior guard Tim Ellison (Alexandria, VA) added 9 points, 7 boards, 4 assists and 1 steal.

UDC (1-17) will play their final home game of the season on Saturday, February 20,  at 3 p.m., against Central State University.
