Bowie State Overwhelms UDC, 83-61

Washington, DC: January 7, 2009-After a first half of close play, the Bowie State University Bulldogs came back in the second half to take a commanding lead and hand the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team a, 83-61, defeat. Sophomore guard Dominic Milburn (Silver Spring, MD) paced the Bulldogs to the win scoring 15 points.

First half play ended with Bowie leading by 8 (36-28), shooting 46 percent (15 for 33) in field goals to UDC's 25 percent (6-24). Shooting from the charity stripe kept UDC close as they converted 74 percent (14 for 19) of their free-throws into points.

Bowie opened the game with a 6-0 run ending with a jumper by Delmar Carey at 18:07. UDC got on the board with a free-throw by freshman guard Kenneth James (Arlington, VA) at 16:52.

Bowie stretched their lead to 16 at 6:58, but UDC came back to cut the lead to 6 on two free-throws by junior guard Tim Ellison (Alexandria, VA) with 2:58 remaining in the half.

 Keith Brooks, a freshman guard from Harlem, NY helped keep UDC close by hitting two three-pointers during the half. Junior guard Jamal Hyman (Plymouth, NC) closed out the half for Bowie with a jumper with 1:03 remaining to give them an 8 point lead.

The second half was like the start of a new game as Bowie found their shooting range hitting 56 percent (18 for 32) of their field goals. The Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run at the 17:36 mark to bring the lead to 17, then to 23 on a Hyman dunk. They extended the lead to as many as 28 before UDC trimmed it to 19.

Bowie shot 51 percent (33 for 65) for the game, 39 percent (5 for 13) from beyond the arc and 57 percent (12 0f 21) from the charity stripe. UDC shot 32 percent (17 for 54) in two-point field goals, 21 percent (3 for 14) from beyond the arc and 69 percent (24 of 35) from the charity stripe.

Four Bowie players were in double figures, including Milburn. Senior guard Duke Crews (Hampton, VA) scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double double, and senior guard Armond Hill (Silver Spring, MD) added 12 points and 9 rebounds. Travis Hyman, a sophomore guard from Annapolis, MD, followed with 11 points and 8 rebounds.

UDC scoring was led by James, with a game-high 17 points, 4 rebounds, I assist, 1 block and 1 steal. Ellison followed with a 13 point, 12 rebound double double, and sophomore guard Chris Leach (Washington, DC) added 12 points, 1 rebound and 3 steals. Brooks (Harlem, NY) contributed 10 points, 2 rebounds 2 assists and 3 steals.

UDC dropped to 1-13 as Bowie improved to 6-3 for the season. UDC returns to the hard court on January 23, at home against The Apprentice School.
