UDC Falls to Alderson-Broadus, 80-46

Washington, DC: January 4, 2010-The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Men's Basketball Team fell to the Alderson-Broaddus College Battlers, 80-46, tonight at the UDC Sports Complex. Jamar Board scored a game-high 22 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, made 2 assists and 2 steals to pace the Battlers to the win, which improved their record to 4-2. UDC fell to 1-12 with the loss.

Alderson-Broaddus led by 7 (34-27) at the break, as UDC kept the score close, looking for a second half breakthrough. The Battlers had other plans, as they opened the half with an 18-point spurt that gave them a 20 point margin with 14:42 remaining. The Firebirds responded with 4 quick points to cut the lead to 16 on a layup by freshman guard Kenneth James (Arlington, VA) at the 12:58 mark, but Alderson-Broaddus made a 13-2 run, to give them a 29 point lead with 9:30 remaining on a layup by Terrell Eargle.

The Battlers continued to outscore the Firebirds ending the game with a 34 point lead when Jewell Short made a layup with 13 seconds remaining. Alderson-Broaddus led the entire way, with their bench outscoring the UDC bench 22-9, and the team capitalizing on 13 UDC turnovers for a 25-13 advantage. The Battlers converted second chance opportunities into 12 points, dominating the boards with 40 rebounds to UDC's 23.

Alderson-Broaddus shot 56 percent (31 for 55) for the game, 42 percent (10 for 24) from beyond the arc and 67 percent (8 for 12) from the charity stripe. UDC shot 35 percent (17 for 48) from the field, 33 percent (2 for 6) from three-point range and 56 percent from the charity stripe.

Eargle also scored in double figures for the Battlers, dropping 14 points and collecting 12 rebounds for a double double, and Mark Summerfield added 13 points and 2 rebounds.

Junior guard Tim Ellison (Alexandria, VA) reached double figures for the Firebirds scoring 16 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. James also scored in double figures finishing with 12 points and 4 rebounds.  

UDC will see their next action on Thursday, January 7, at home against across-town rival Bowie State University. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
