Shaw Men Defeat UDC 101-57

Raleigh, NC: February 19, 2009—With six players in double figures, the Shaw University Bears unloaded on the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds tonight, defeating them, 101-57, at the Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina. Will Graham led the Bears to the win with a 16 point scoring effort.

Except for the opening minute, Shaw led most of the way, shooting 58% (39-67) for the game, including getting 46 points from their bench, 29 points from turnovers and 18 fast break points.  Shaw led 49-33 at the break on 62% shooting from the field.

In addition to Graham, reaching double figures were John Duros (15), Rodney Callwood (14), Brandon Beckwith (13) Najee Edwards (11), and Eddie Dawson with 10 points.  Beckwith also grabbed a game- high 13 rebounds.

Junior guard David Burton (Philadelphia, PA) led the Firebird scoring tallying 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits were and senior guard Kechan Myers (Philadelphia, PA) with 12 points and four rebounds and sophomore guard Tim Ellison (Alexandria, VA) with 10 points and six rebounds.

UDC only shot 33% (23-70) from the field for the game, 14% (2-14) from three-point range and 60% (9-15) from the charity stripe. UDC did, however, get 14 second chance points to Shaw’s nine.

UDC is now 10-15 for the season, while Shaw improved to 12-15. The Firebirds will close out their regular season next Thursday, February 26, at home against the Columbia Union College Pioneers.
