UDC Men Defeat Philadelphia Sciences, 57-54
Washington, DC: February 14, 2009—In a closely played game, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds defeated the University of Sciences in Philadelphia, 57-54, this afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. Sophomore guard Tim Ellison led the Firebirds to the win scoring 18 points, and grabbing four rebounds.
Senior guard Kechan Myers was the other Firebird in double figures during the game, scoring 17 points and grabbing three rebounds, while dishing out three assists. Freshman guard Chris Leach, making his first start of the season, scored 8 points and collected seven rebounds.
The Firebirds shot 39% (10-26) from the
field in the first half, taking a 25-18 point lead into the
half-time break. Sciences changed their pace in the second half
outscoring UDC 36-32 on 43% (20-47) shooting.
Guard Tramar Beaman, led the Devils in the game, scoring a
game-high 22 points and grabbing four rebounds. Forward Adewale
Adefemi added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Although the game was close, UDC led most of the way, including opening as much as a 10 point lead with 14:24 remaining in the game. Sciences came back to cut the lead to 1, with 41 seconds remaining, but Myers responded with a layup and a free- throw before center Ryan Wood was fouled with 3 seconds remaining in the game and made a free-throw to seal the win for the Firebirds.
With this win, UDC improved to 10-14 for the
season, while Sciences fell to 7-17. UDC returns to the hard court
on February 19, against Shaw University in Raleigh, North
Carolina.
