UDC Men Get, 81-76, Win Over Apprentice

Washington, DC; February 7, 2009—Sophomore Guard Tim Ellison scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a, 81-76, win over The Apprentice School Builders, this afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. Also scoring in double figures for the Firebirds were junior forward David Burton (Philadelphia, PA) with 16 points and nine rebounds, and senior guard Kechan Myers with 15 points and three rebounds.

UDC took a 35-33 lead into the locker room at the half-time break on 44%  (15-34) shooting from the field.  Apprentice shot a close 45% (13-29) for the half.

The Builders jumped out to 6 point lead on a 6-0 run before UDC knotted the score at 6, at the 15:48 mark. The Builders came right back to regain the lead until the Firebirds tied it at 33 with 1:13 remaining in the half.

DC shot 52% (16-31) from the field in the second half and 48 %( 31-65) for the game, and they shot 15% (2-13) from beyond the arc, and made 65% (17-26) of their free throws. Apprentice shot 43% (28-65) from the field, 32% (6-19) from three-point range and 70% (14-20) from the free throw line.

DC led the entire second half. Their bench outscored the Builder’s 20-8, and the team scored 48 points in the paint. The Firebirds also had a 38-31 advantage in rebounds.

Four Builders were in double figures, led by Jason Arrington with 19 points, followed by Eric Ruffin with 16, Fred Spratley 13, and Eric Joe with 12 points.

UDC improved to 9-14 with this win, while Apprentice fell to 10-13. The Firebirds take a week off and return to the hard court on Saturday, February 14, in a double-header against Philadelphia Sciences.
