UDC Men Defeat Philadelphia Sciences 55-45

Philadelphia, PA: January 19, 2009—Junior guard David Burton (Philadelphia, PA) recorded his second double-double of the season tonight in leading the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 55-45 defeat of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Burton scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the winning effort.

Burton scored UDC’s first goal of the night when he took the ball from the tip off and drove to the basket to put up a soft layup to give them the lead in the opening seconds of the game. UDC never relinquished the lead, going into the break with a 28-23 advantage, and not even allowing Philadelphia to tie the score.

Three Firebirds scored in double figures in tonight’s game, including Burton. Sophomore guard Tim Ellison had 15 points and 3 rebounds, and senior guard Kechan Myers scored 10 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

UDC shot 41 percent (20 for 49) from the field, 23 percent ( 3 for 13) from three-point range and 67 percent (12 for 18) from the charity stripe. Philadelphia shot 29 percent ( 17 for 59) from the field and 53 percent (9 of 17)  from the free throw line.

Adewale Adefemi was the only Philadelphia player to reach double figures, scoring 13 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Curtis Fitch and Shane Connor scored 8 point apiece.
UDC returns to the hard court on January 22, against NYACK College in New York.
