Elizabeth City State Tops UDC 90-64

Elizabeth City, NC: February 12, 2008—In a lop- sided game, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds, 90-64, tonight at the R. L. Vaughn Center. UDC trailed the entire game before finally falling to ECSU by 26 points.

Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) led the Firebirds in scoring with 25 points while grabbing 10 rebounds for his fourth  double -double of the season. Senior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD)  was the only other Firebird to reach double figures, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. The Vikings had four players in double figures, paced by Matt Nowlin with 25 points, while Anthony Hilliard followed with 19, Anthony Butler with 14, and Olajuwon Johnson added 11 points.

The game saw UDC hit with two player technical fouls and three team technical fouls that helped ECSU to make 25 of 29 free throws for an 86% conversion rate. The Viking bench also outscored UDC’s 25-14 to help boost the winning score.

ECSU made 48 % (28-59) of  their field goals compared to 40 % ( 23-57) shooting by UDC. The Vikings also made 53 % (9-17) of their attempts at the charity line, while UDC only made 16 % (3-19) of their free throws.

UDC fell to 11-8  for the season, while ESCU improved to 18-4. UDC returns to action on February 15, at Virginia Union University.
