UDC Throttles Columbia Union College 90-56

Takoma Park, MD: February 2, 2008—Senior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) paced the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 90-56 win over the Columbia Union College Pioneers in a late game tonight at "The Pit”.  Four Firebirds scored in double figures to give them the 34-point victory, including Petersen’s game high 23 points, senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) 16 points, senior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) 15, and senior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) with 10.

UDC used a  zone defense to control Pioneer scoring while pouring it on offensively to shoot 53% (32-60) for the game, converting a season high 68% (12-14) of their free-throws and hitting 37% (7-19) of their 3-point field goals.

The Firebirds jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back as they stayed well ahead of the Pioneers the entire game, getting 45 of their points in the paint, 10 of which came on fast breaks. UDC out rebounded Columbia Union 45 to 33.

Three Pioneers scored in double figures, led by Maurice Stallion with 20 points, followed by Dana Clark with 19 and Tim Turner with 12 points. Columbia Union shot only 32% (20-63) for the game.

With this win, UDC improved to 11-7 for the season, while Columbia Union dropped to 1-18. UDC returns to action February 12, at Elizabeth City State University in a re-match, after defeating them 65-60 at home in November.
