Washington, DC: February 17, 2008—For the second time this season, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds showed the Cheyney State University Wolves the door, this time defeating them, 90-78, in the Physical Activities Center. Senior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) collected his fourth double-double of the season today, scoring 21-points and grabbing 13 rebounds to lead the Firebirds to victory.

Six Firebirds, including Shaw, scored in double figures as they raced to the win. Senior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ) came in from the bench to contribute 16 points, followed by senior point guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) with 15, senior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) 14, Senior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) 13 and senior center Don Powell added 11 points.

UDC  took a  41-37 lead into break after there were 7 ties in the half and allowing Cheyney to lead by as many as 11 points after making an 11-0 run. UDC made a 9-0 run at the 8:22 mark to knot the score at 23, and after four additional ties Petersen hit a jumper to bring the score to 41-34 before Cheyney’s Tyrone Smith drained a three pointer to close out the period. In a bit of irony, UDC and Cheyney shot 47% in the first half.

UDC shot 49% (16 for 33) in the second half while Cheyney only shot 44% (14 for 32) as they fell further behind and failed to tie the score or capture another lead in the game. The Firebirds finished the game shooting 48% (32 for 67) to Cheyney’s 45% (28 for 62)

Four Wolves were in double figures during the game led by Edwin Braswell with 21 points, followed by Tyrone Smith with 17, Dominique Curry 14 and Dawud Morris with 11 points. The wolves fell to 14-7 with the loss, while the Firebirds improved to 13-8.

UDC will have a two-week break until the National Independent Schools Basketball Tournament that they will host March 1-4, in the Physical Activities Center. Eight NCAA Division II Independent Schools will participate in the Tournament.
