UDC Edges Cheyney State 69-66

Cheyney, PA: January 20, 2008—After tying the score at 66, with 55 seconds remaining in the game, the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds went on to defeat the Cheyney State University Wolves, 69-66, on a steal and free-throw by senior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD). Cheyney knotted the score at 66 on a 3-point shot by Robbie Simpson, but Smallwood was fouled by Tyrone Smith with 15 seconds remaining, and shot two free-throws to make the score 68-66. Tyrone Smith then had the ball stolen from him by Smallwood, whom he promptly fouled, which enabled him to shoot the winning point on one of two free-throws.

UDC took a 42-38 lead into the locker room at the break, shooting 60% in field goals and 67 % from beyond the arc.

Four Firebirds were in double figures for the game, led by senior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) and junior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ), with 14 points each. Walker came in from the bench to make his contribution. Smallwood scored 13 points, and senior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) scored 11.

UDC shot 57% (24 of 42) field goals, 64% (9 of 14) 3-point field goals and 67% (12 of 18) free-throws to win the game. With the win, UDC improved to 9-5, while Cheyney fell to 8-6.
