UDC Defeats West Chester 87-79

WASHINGTON, D.C.: FEBRUARY 19, 2007—Junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD)  and junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) combined for 40 points (20 each) to lead the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to a 87-79 defeat of the West Chester University Golden Rams at home tonight. The win enabled the Firebirds to sweep this year’s series with the Rams.

UDC took a 15 point lead (30-15) in the first half on an 8-0 run at the 10:53 mark, ignited by sophomore guard Brian Adam’s (Washington, DC) lay-up. The lead increased to 17 with 1 second remaining in the half when Charlie Smallwood canned a 3-pointer, with an assist from junior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD).

The Firebirds took a 46-29 lead into the break on 19-40 (48%) two-point field goal shooting, 5-13 (39%) three-point shooting and 3-6 (50%) shooting from the charity line.

West Chester played a more aggressive game  in the second half, chipping at the lead and  bringing the score to within 6 points with 22 seconds remaining in the game on a 3-pointer by Anthony Haley with an assist from Kevin Stokes. This would not be enough though as UDC closed out the game when West Chester fouled Charlie Smallwood and he made two free throws to raise the lead to 8 points with 20 seconds remaining to end the game.

Also scoring in double figures for the Firebirds was guard Brian Adams with a season high 16 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal. Forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) added 10 points, and 5 rebounds.

UDC shot 30-62 (48%) from two-point range, 8-16 (50%) from three-point range, and 19-33 (58%) from the free throw line for the game. West Chester shot 27-48 (56%) from two-point range, 10-16 (63%) from three-point range, and 15-23 (58%) from the charity line.

Three West Chester players tallied 16 points each to lead them in scoring. Shawn Werdt, Aaron Williams and Donnell Butler provided the high scoring for the Rams.

The 16-7 Firebirds will travel to Fort Myers, Florida on February 22, to play in the Independent Schools Tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. They will finish the regular season at home on March 1, when they host the Columbia Union College Pioneers, whom they defeated, 86-77, on February 3.
