UDC Downs Kutztown 84-81 in Overtime

KUTZTOWN, PA: FEBRUARY 21, 2007—The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds defeated the Kutztown University Golden Bears, 84-81, in an exciting, down to the wire, overtime game tonight in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. With the score tied at 81, and 1 second remaining in overtime, junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) hit a three point shot to win the game for the Firebirds.

With the win, UDC swept the series between the two schools, after having defeated them earlier in the season at home.

The first half was closely played with neither team able to make a serious run. UDC led 30-24 at the break on 11-31 (36%) shooting from two-point range, 1-3 (33%) from three-point range and 7-12 (58%) from the line.

Kutztown tied the score four times in the second half, including two free throws by Dave Ben to tie it at 71 with 31 seconds remaining in regulation, which took the game into overtime. The Firebirds scored 13 points to the Bears’ 10, in overtime, and sealed the win on Charlie Smallwood’s three-pointer.

Five Firebirds scored in double figures, paced by junior forward Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) with a double-double season high 26 points and 15 rebounds. Charlie Smallwood followed with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Junior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitchellville, MD) added 13 points and 8 rebounds, and junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds to the win.

For the game, UDC shot 28-75 (37%) from two-point range, 4-8 (50%) from three-point range, and 24-39 (62%) from the charity line. With this win, UDC’s season record is 17-7.

Four Golden Bears scored in double figures including, Stephen Dennis with a game high 28 points, Dave Ben 14, Nate Edwards 13, and Sean McKeon with 10. 

UDC travels to Fort Myers, Florida tomorrow, to play in the Independent Schools Tournament, February 24-27, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
