Firebirds Defeat Flagler College Saints 72-64

FORT MYERS, FL: FEBRUARY 26, 2007--Junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD) paced the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to victory for the third consecutive game in the Independent Schools Tournament today as they defeated the Flagler College Saints 72-64.

UDC led 32-25 at the break after allowing Flagler to tie the score twice in the half. The Firebirds converted second chance opportunities into 10 points, while shooting 40 % from two-point range.

The Firebirds out ran the Saints in the second half scoring 10 fast break points while its bench rose to the challenge to score 11 points, as they shot 50 percent for the half and 44 percent from the field for the game.

Joining Petersen with double-digit scores for the Firebirds were junior guard Antwon Hawkins (Mitcheville, MD) with 15 points, and junior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ) with 14.

Three Flagler players scored in double digits. Sam Jonzenville scored a game high 21 points, Ben De La Cruz 12 and Lee Wise 11.

UDC is no 19-8 for the season and will return to action Thursday, March 1, at home against Columbia Union College for a 25th Anniversary celebration of the UDC 1982 Division II NCAA National Basketball Championship.
