Firebirds Defeat Pioneers 86-77

Takoma Park, MD: February 3, 2007—Junior guard Willie Shaw (Alexandria, VA) led the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds to an 86-77 win over the Columbia Union College Pioneers tonight in Takoma Park, Maryland, with a double-double and game high 28 points and 18 rebounds. This was the fourth time this season that Shaw has paced the Firebirds to victory.

UDC’s Junior guard Charlie Smallwood (Palmer Park, MD) started a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer at the 17:03 mark of the first half before CUC’s Darren Travis responded with a 2-point field goal at the 13:37 mark to make the score 17-7 UDC. 

The Firebirds had an 18-point lead at the break with the score 51-33, on 54 percent (20-37) two point field goals, 25 percent (3-12) 3-point shooting and 89 percent (8-9) free throw shooting.

Shaw gave the Firebirds a 20-point lead at the start of the second half when he made a lay-up at the 19:03 mark, with an assist from junior guard Frank Petersen (Silver Spring, MD). The Pioneers staged a mini- come back in the second half chipping at the lead to bring the final score to within 9- points, outscoring the Firebirds 44-35, but couldn’t overcome the much stronger and faster team.

UDC won the game on 48 percent (30-63) two point field goal shooting, 38 percent (6-16) three- point shooting and 80 percent (20-25) free throw shooting. Columbia Union shot 37 percent (27-73) from two point range, 23 percent (5-22) three- point shooting and 95 percent (18-19) shooting at the charity line.

UDC had four players in double figures including Shaw; Smallwood -19 points and 9 rebounds; junior guard Justin Walker (Teaneck, NJ) – 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Petersen with 12 points and 6 rebounds.

Corey Blythe led the Pioneers with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Darren Travis with 21 points and 4 rebounds.

The 13-6 Firebirds will return to action on Wednesday, February 7, against the West Chester University Golden Rams in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The Firebirds are ranked 6th in the NCAA East Region this week.
