SAINT AUGUSTINE’S DEFEATS UDC IN BASKETBALL CONTEST

Washington, DC: The Saint Augustine’s Mighty Falcons defeated the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds basketball team by the score of 99-68, in the UDC gymnasium tonight. It was the seventh consecutive loss for the fledgling Firebirds, who are in a rebuilding year after the cancellation of their 2004-05 season.

Saint Augustine’s took advantage of the undermanned, inexperienced Firebirds, who had only six players competing against their eleven players. Taking the lead early in the game, the Mighty Falcons were ahead 42-32 at the break, but kept pressing the Firebirds down to the last few seconds of the game. Then with the Firebirds in foul trouble, and without bench help, Saint Augustine’s ran the score up to 99 in an effort to score 100 points. Saint Augustine’s shot 43 percent from the field, while UDC made 47 percent of its field goals, but suffered from 27 turnovers.

Claude Neely led Saint Augustine’s with 30 points, 11-19 field goals, 12 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Nicholas King scored 25 points, pulled down 4 rebounds, gave 5 assists and had 1 steal.  Antonio Fitzgerald dropped in 24 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and had 4 steals.

Jumaane Sorrells was the leading scorer for the Firebirds with a career high 34 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Brian Isabelle added 14 points, and grabbed 6 rebounds.

The Firebirds will see their next action at home on Saturday, December 17, 2005, at 2 o’clock against West Virginia Technical Institute.
