JUMAANE SORRELLS RANKED 16TH IN NCAA SCORING

Washington, DC - Among the NCAA Division II schools, UDC senior, Jumaane Sorrels is ranked number 16 in the Points per Game category through the end of the University of the District of Columbia 2005-06 basketball season. Sorrels is a true Firebird. He played high school basketball at De Matha Catholic High School and at Springbrook High School, where he learned through lessons about the politics between coaches and their top players – yet he wanted more. He transferred from Catonsville Community College and has been a tremendous asset to the Firebird team since his arrival here.

Sorrels’ scoring average of 21.6 points per game among Division II opponents placed him on a short list of elite basketball players in the country. He completed his season with a combined 497 total points with an impressive 69 total made shots from the 3-point range. According to his team-mates, Sorrels is both proud and humbled by his achievements – he sees it as a team success.

“I enjoyed every minute of it; it was the most fun I ever had. I wanted to finish in the best way possible. Plus when the 2004-05 season was cancelled suddenly, I felt I had to come back and play well,” Sorrels said.

A player who grew up admiring former NBA great Isiah Thomas, Sorrells has sought to emulate his round ball hero. As the Firebird floor leader, Jumaane Sorrels has proven to be a great athlete with a tremendous work ethic. His mental toughness sustained him through out the season and his scoring ranking is, indeed, a bright spot on the Men’s Basketball season.

The University of the District of Columbia basketball team completed the season by competing in the 1st Annual Independent Schools Tournament in Florida. Jumaane Sorrels completes is college playing career as a Firebird and graduated in May 2006, with a bachelors degree in studio art. He hopes to play professional basketball oversees and also has hopes of using his degree in Studio Arts to venture into television production and animation.
