SOUTH DAKOTA DEFEATS UDC IN BASKETBALL

Washington, DC: The University of South Dakota Coyotes paid their first official basketball visit to the District of Columbia tonight and made quite an impression on University of the District of Columbia fans by defeating the Firebirds 76-59.  The Coyotes were led by senior All-American forward Turner Trofholz who gave quite a performance with a double double scoring 23 points, on 8-9 two point field goals shooting, 2-5 three point field goals, grabbing 15 rebounds and dishing out 1 assist. Dustin Little followed with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Jesse Becker added 12 points while giving 5 assists.

The Coyotes lead 43-23 at the break, making 50 percent of their two point field goals, and 53 percent of their 3 point field goals. They also hit 9-10 free throws. In the second half they were a little less proficient but still hit 48 percent of their two point field goals, ending the game with 45 percent of their field goals finding the target. The team hit 84 percent of their field free throws during the game.

While it was their 9th consecutive loss of the season, the Firebirds, nevertheless, gave South Dakota a good game, with Jumaane Sorrells scoring a career high 31 points, more than half of all of UDC’s points, while pulling down 2 rebounds and making 2 steals. Frank Peterson, playing his second game of the season, dropped in 13 points, gathered 3 rebounds, made 2 assists and had two steals.

UDC outscored South Dakota in the paint with 28 to their 18. UDC also made more points off turnovers19 to South Dakota’s 10. South Dakota’s bench was a little more productive that UDC’s, scoring 9 bench points to UDC’s 2.
