Firebirds Defeated by Nationally Ranked Mavericks

Washington, D.C. — The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team faced a tough defeat against the nationally ranked Mercy University on Saturday afternoon, with a final score of 5-1 at the UDC Turf Field. Despite UDC's efforts, Mercy's relentless attack proved too much for the Firebirds to handle.

Mercy opened the scoring in the first half with a goal by Johannes Hanken Tjostheim in the 36th minute, assisted by Juan Jose Alvarez Acosta and Santiago Serrano. Just minutes later, Hugo Martin doubled Mercy's lead with an unassisted goal at 39:53, leaving the Firebirds trailing 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Mercy continued to dominate with an unassisted goal from Marcel Duffau in the 54th minute, followed by Tjostheim's second goal of the match in the 65th minute, assisted by Santiago Dutilh. Julian Holland sealed the victory for Mercy with a goal at 67:44, assisted by Santiago Serrano.

UDC's lone goal came from Axel Gamez, who scored a penalty kick in the 78th minute to avoid the shutout.
