Men's Soccer Draws Against Shepherd in Season Opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va- The University of the District of Columbia men's soccer team kicked off their season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Shepherd University at the Shepherd Soccer Complex.

The Firebirds started strong with a goal from Santiago Gordillo Martinez in the 36th minute, who sent a penalty kick straight into the bottom left corner of the net, giving UDC a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. However, Shepherd's Faustin Ndagije equalized in the 88th minute, with an assist from Ryan Fisher, leveling the score at 1-1 just before the end of regulation time.

The match saw UDC putting up 9 shots with 5 on target, while Shepherd had 14 shots with 8 on target.  Sergio Becerra, made a game-high 7 crucial saves, while Shepherd's goalkeeper, Aidan Houck, had 4 saves.

Both teams played a competitive match, with UDC holding 48% possession compared to Shepherd's 52%. The home team also held the slight advantage in corner kicks 5-3. 

UDC will be looking to build on this performance in their next match as they aim for their first win of the season. The Firebirds' defense, led by Jovani Orellana and David Akinsanya, was commendable, and the team's offense created several scoring opportunities, including Ignacio Lopez' game high two shots on goal.
