WASHINGTON, DC – Reserve freshman guard Kory Cooley scored a season-high 27 points to lead all scorers, but the University of the District of Columbia men's basketball team dropped its third straight game to open the 2014-15 season to Bowie State, 81-66, on Homecoming Night Wednesday at UDC Sports Complex.
Cooley (Art – Silver Spring, MD/Calvin Coolidge HS) dazzled a raucous Homecoming Crowd estimated at 400 people with 11-of-21 FG shooting. Starting senior point guard Quasim Jones (Mass Media Arts – Philadelphia, PA/Johnson CC) added 12 points and four assists, and freshman guard/forward Andre Williams (Business Management - Maybrook, NY/Valley Central HS) pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds to go with seven points scored.
Bowie State (3-0), ranked No. 3 in the D2SIDA Men's Atlantic Region Poll released Wednesday afternoon, was led by starting forward Andre Jackson, who made 9-of-11 from the field and 2-of-2 from three-point range to finish with a team-high 24 points while adding a team-high six rebounds. Guard Cameron Knox added some perimeter shooting, making 5-of-9 from the field (3-of-5 from long range) to finish with 13 points.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Firebirds 44-37, out-shot them 53-percent to 37-percent from the field, 56-percent to 22-percent from three-point range and 60-percent to 50-percent from the free-throw line, and were much better in the assist to turnover category (17/13 to 9/8).
The Firebirds will host Nyack in an East region game on Saturday, November 22nd at 3 p.m.
