Firebirds Compete at Coppin State Invitational

BALTIMORE - Hoping to enhance placement on the NCAA Provisional Qualifying list, a small group  of Firebirds competed at the Coppin State Invitational on Friday evening.

Field events were the order of the day as senior Shauna-Kay Creary (Accounting - Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew HS) achieved a season best in the Triple Jump with a leap of 11.98M. This moves her up the NCAA Provisional qualifying list to 29th best in Division II. Creary may have moved even further up the list had either of her first two giant leaps counted; unfortunately, she fouled both times by mere inches.

"I really felt for Shauna that she missed out on two of her better marks, but she still showed the heart of a champion to close out the year and possibly her career with a season best," McKenzie said. "She has had a fantastic career at UDC, and has truly elevated this program to the next level. If her career is in fact over, she will be sorely missed."

Next up for the Firebirds was senior Kaydian Jones (Journalism - Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew HS) who ran in a small field of three in the 100M. She was a comfortable winner in a time of 12.21 seconds.

The Firebirds will now await the declaration period to determine the field for the 2014 NCAA Championships.
