Firebirds Finish Strong Before ECC Championships

Princess Anne, MD – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Indoor Track & Field team competed well finishing third at the UMES Invite & Combined Events hosted by University of Maryland Eastern Shore Friday and Saturday.

Senior Shaneika Bowra performed exceptionally at the meet winning in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.86, and placing second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.22.  Shaneika was also a part of the first place finishing Firebirds 4x200 meter relay race team to end her day with all top two finishes. Junior Cierra Roberts  had a great meet placing first in the long jump (5.47m) and placing third 60 meter dash with a personal best of 7.93. Cierra was a key part of both the first place finishing 4x200 meter relay team and the second place 4x400 meter relay team.

Freshman Shanise Rose took the fourth place spot in the 60 meter dash with a personal best of 7.95, the 60m hurdles (9.44), and fifth in the 60m hurdles (9.56). Senior Tajah Franklin took the second place spot in the shot put falling just .02m short of first with a distance of 9.95m. Junior Temera Duncan finished third in the 400m race (1:02.52), junior Shannell Hibbert took third in the 60m hurdles (9.40) and fifth in the 200m dash (26.53).    

The Firebird relay teams were in form with the team of Temera Duncan, Shannell Hibbert,Tishana Dorn and Cierra Roberts taking second place in the 4x400 meter race with a time of 4:10.07. The 4x200 meter team of Patricia McLean, Shaneika Bowra, Cierra Roberts and Shannell Hibbert took first place with a season best (1:44.55). Coach Phillips said this about the meet "The ladies, competed well. We made some progress in some of the events we participated and we saw some areas we still have to work on. We will use this week to fine tune some things in preparation for the ECC Championship next weekend".

The Firebirds will travel Staten Island, NY to participate in the East Coast Conference Championship on Saturday, February 16th.
