UDC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Competes at Terrapin Invitational

HYATTSVILLE, MD – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Indoor Track & Field team competed in the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex on Saturday.

Highlights for the meet included two top-10 event finishes. Freshman Temera Duncan was 7^th of 42 competitors with a season-best time of 26.54 in the 200M, and freshman Niasia Harding was 10^th of 30 competitors in the 400M with a time of 1:00.07.

Other quality performances in the track events included an 11^th place showing out of 43 racers with an 8.07 finish in the 60M dash by junior Stacy-Ann Rowe, a 9.41 running in the 60M hurdles by Shannell Hibbert good for 12^th place out of 37, and an 18^th place finish out of 30 in the 400M by Deasia Greer with a time of 1:01.83.

According to first year head coach Joel Phillip, the Firebirds had been looking forward to running a season-best time in the 4x400M Relay, but an injury prevented them from doing so.

"Temera [Duncan] felt some tightness in her calves and pulled up on the first leg," he explained.

In the field events, senior Brittany Okon leapt out to 4.74M to place 17^th of 31 in the Long Jump event, and senior Iman Scott and junior Tajah Franklin placed 27^th and 28^th, respectively, out of 32 competitors in the Shot Put event. Scott threw 9.69M and Franklin, 9.39M – both season bests.

The Firebirds now have two weeks to get ready for their next meet – the Vince Brown Invitational in Newport News, VA on February 4^th.

"We did not do quite as well as we did last week, but the student-athletes gave their best effort," Phillip said. "We have this upcoming weekend off, and we will use it to get some rest and recovery."
