Firebirds Set to Compete at East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday

STATEN ISLAND, NY – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Indoor Track & Field team is set to compete in the 4th annual East Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship meet at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

The Firebirds won back-to-back ECC Indoor Championships in 2013 and 2014, and last year they came in 3rd place (95 points) behind champion Roberts Wesleyan (140 points) and runner-up Georgian Court (113).

UDC is coming off of a tremendous collective performance in its last meet – the Fastrack Invitational – held at the site of the ECC Championships, Ocean Breeze. The Firebirds feature one of the top High Jump and Triple Jumpers in the East Region in freshman standout Saida Burns-Moore. She is coming off a season-best 1.70M in the High Jump her last time out.

UDC also boasts the preseason ECC Athlete of the Year in senior Simone Grant. She is coming off an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 5.57M in the Long Jump, and is also among the East Region's best in the 200M event.

Head Coach Alton McKenzie acknowledged the growth the conference has seen in the last four years, producing strong competitors across all events.

"I'm looking forward to yet another exciting and competitive ECC Championship," McKenzie said. "As a team, we've had good performances in several events over the past few recent meets, so I'm expecting us to be very competitive. We'll see where our point total leaves us at the end of the meet."
