UDC Track & Field Team Spends Halloween Eve Volunteering at Food & Friends

WASHINGTON, DC - The University of the District of Columbia Track & Field team spent its Halloween Eve morning packing a whole lot more than treats as the Firebirds volunteered at the Food & Friends Organization last Friday, October 30th.

With a systematic assembly line, the group packed over 200 bags of groceries, with attentive focus required for individuals with various special diets. Two-hundred and seventy soups were not just packed swiftly but labeled appropriately and packed, to be ready for delivery.

Food & Friends prepares and delivers nutritious meals and groceries to hundreds of individuals with HIV/AIDs and other life-challenging illnesses in the DC Metro area. According to head coach Alton McKenzie, the Firebirds' role of food preparation and packaging meals at Food & Friends was a wonderful experience.

"The staff at Food & Friends made us feel fortunate to be involved as they emphasized they couldn't do what they did without volunteers," McKenzie said. "It wasn't only a meaningful and valuable experience, but was also fun. Getting a group of competitive student-athletes in a warehouse on an assembly line type packaging scenario made for some very fast packing! We look forward to heading back there some time in the near future."
