WASHINGTON, DC – Fresh off of their second straight East Coast Conference Championship, the University of the District of Columbia's Women's Track and Field team had a weight lifting day on February 28th.  Instead of barbells and weight plates, it was pounds of chicken, broccoli, fruits, cereals and other foods, as they partnered with Martha's Table to distribute to local families in need.  Martha's Table is a charity organization that provides education, food, and opportunities to families in the DC area.

The Firebirds set up what Martha's Table calls a Mobile Grocery Store at the Powell Elementary School in Washington, DC.  After the choice pantry was set, the students at the Elementary School and their parents could shop for fresh produce, proteins, and dry goods.
"This endeavor was not just about distributing the items, but the opportunity to transform the cafeteria into a grocery store was an interesting and fulfilling experience," Head Coach Alton Mckenzie said.  "It was great to be able to team up with Martha's Table for this community service event."

By generously giving their time for nearly four hours, the Track and Field team was able to help Martha's Table build their impressive service numbers.  Martha's Table provides an average of 60,000 meals per month and partners with around 10,000 volunteers each year.  The coordinators from Martha's Table were very grateful for the help provided by the student-athletes, and impressed with their desire to give back to the community.
