Firebirds to Take Flight at First Ever ECC Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday
SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY - This Saturday, February 23rd, the Firebirds will once again lace up their shoes as they head to the inaugural East Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship.
"We're very excited to be a part of the ECC Indoor Championships and we're looking forward to great competition across the board in all events," head coach Alton McKenzie said.
As it chases the team title, District of Columbia will focus where its strengths lie to achieve this goal by hopefully placing well in all the sprints, jumps and sprint relays.
Individually, junior Shauna-Kay Creary (Accounting- Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrews HS) returns to the runway hoping to improve on her NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Creary is a two-time ECC Field Event Athlete of the Week this season and one of the favorites in the long and triple jumps. She will be joined by multiple teammates who are also very capable of earning valuable points for the team in its title chase.
According to McKenzie, the order of events favors the Firebirds. The 4x400M relay, arguably their strongest event, is the last event of the competition and could help lift them past another team if it comes down to the final event. The Firebirds rank nationally in this event and are looking to better their time while securing a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championships.
"The most important thing is for us to compete hard and fight for every point we can, and I believe the team is ready to do just that," McKenzie said. "Our goal is to come home with as many All-Conference nods as possible, and hopefully that will put is in contention for a team title."
