University of the District of Columbia Competes at Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ - The University of the District of Columbia women's indoor track and field squad competed at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, February 22nd at Jadwin Gym.

Highlights for the Firebirds included a personal-best 8.13 run in the 60M by sophomore Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, MD - Polytechnic HS) for fourth-place in her heat (13th overall), and sophomore Areial Clark's (Kennesaw, GA - North Cobb HS) season-best 12.47M shot-put throw for 6th place overall.

Also, sophomore Atiya Amis (Washington, DC - Dunbar HS) just missed qualifying for Finals with a time of 8.05 in the 60M, which was good for 2nd place in her heat and 9th overall. Freshman Tatyana Commock (Washington, DC - McKinley Tech HS) was not far behind, finishing in 8.08 for 4th place in the same heat, and 11th overall.

Coming off of a stellar performance at the Division II Challenge two weeks ago, and having had a week of rest, head coach Alton McKenzie said he had expected better results at this meet.

"We didn't have the performances we would've liked as a team overall," McKenzie said. "Still, we had some good performances with Jasmine Smith running a season-best in the 60M and Areial throwing a season-best 12.47M in the shot-put. We can't focus on the past, so we're looking to bounce back next week and learn from this meet. We just need to compete hard next week and look to end the Indoor Season on a high note."

The Firebirds will compete again on Sunday, February 26th at the George Mason Last Chance Meet.
