Firebirds Indoor Track & Field Gets Off to Good Start at Patriot Games

Fairfax, VA: January 29, 2010—The career of UDC Women's Head Track Coach Alton McKenzie got off to a good start on Saturday, at the George Mason University Patriot games, as the UDC Women's Indoor Track & Field Team  took to the oval for the first time this season.

One of the highlights of the day's effort was the performance of two-time All-American senior Erica Nixon (Health Education –Bronx, NY). Nixon finished 5th overall in the women's 60m dash.

After posting 7.96 in the prelims, she came back in the finals to finish 5th overall with a time of 7.98. This was her best performance in the 60m in two years and it bodes well for the season with this being her first race of the 2010-11 indoor season.

Freshman Shauna-Kay Creary (Business Management- Kingston, Jamaica) opened her collegiate career with a 2nd place finish in the women's high jump with a very respectful 1.60m.

Two-time All-American Saleena Green (Marketing-Kingston, Jamaica) opened her season in the 200m with an 8th place finish in 26.71 seconds (field of 25), while two-time All-American, Junior Kaneesha Hollis (Criminal Justice-Centreville, MD), and finished 8th overall in the 400m with a time of 1:02.06.

Speaking of the team's performance, Coach McKenzie said, "With us having a late start to the season, I was impressed with the level of competitiveness based on this being our first meet. I think that will carryover through the outdoor season."

The Firebirds return to the oval on February 12, at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Invitational in Princess Anne, Maryland.
