Indoor Track Team Debuts 2010 Season at Delaware Invitational with Impressive Performances

Newark, DE: January 8, 2010-The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Indoor Track Team returned to the oval today at the University of Delaware Invitational in Newark, Delaware to begin their 2010 season. Juniors Erica Nixon (Bronx, NY) and Dicoda Waugh (Kingston, Jamaica) led the Team with outstanding first place wins in their respective events.

Nixon, a 2009 All-American and All-Acad emic track athlete, won the 60 meter hurdles finishing in 9.36 seconds. Waugh won the women's triple jump with the distance of 10.48 meters. Waugh also placed 3rd in the women long jump with the distance of 4.86 meters.

Also finishing high in the long jump were sophomore All-American Kaneesha Hollis (Centreville, MD) 4.72m, freshman Famatta Lewis (Camden, NJ) 4.69m and junior All-American Saleena Green (Kingston, Jamaica) 4.64m.  Hollis also finished high in the 800 meter run, placing 3rd with the time of 2:39.13, while Lewis also finished 2nd in the 200 meter dash. Junior Demia Franklin (Baltimore, MD) finished the 500 meter run in 1:27.49.

Another member of the Firebirds, freshman Calister Jones (Fort Washington, MD) turned in a good performance finishing second in the 400 meter dash with the time of 1:01.46.  

The Firebird 4x400 meter relay  ‘A' and ‘B' teams finished in 2nd and 3rd places, respectively, in their event. The ‘A" team, consisting of Nixon, Green, Hollis and Lewis, finished in 4:25.28. The ‘B' team of freshman Domini Dotson (Upper Marlboro, MD), Jones, Franklin and sophomore All-American Latoya Allen (Washington, DC) came in at 4:26.51.

The Firebirds finished in second place overall among the five participating schools. They return to the track on January 15, in the New York Gotham Cup in New York, NY.
