UDC 4X 400 METER RELAY TEAM TO COMPETE IN NCAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Washington, DC-- The University of the District of Columbia’s Women’s Indoor 4x400 Meter Relay Team has qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.  A total of 400 participants will compete in the championships.  Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching an automatic standard established for each event with additional selections taken from the field of provisional qualifiers.

The championships will be held March 13-14 in Houston, Texas at Yeoman Field House.  The University of Houston will serve as the host of the championships and will be a part of the 2009 NCAA Division II Winter National Championships Festival.

UDC is seeded 7th in a field of 10 teams, including perennial powerhouses Lincoln University (1), St. Augustine’s College (2), and Grand Valley State College (3).  Members of the UDC Team are,  1) junior Stella Sang (Kapsabet, Kenya), 2) sophomore Saleena Green (St. Catherine, Jamaica), 3) freshman Latoya Allen (Washington, DC),  4) freshman Kaneesha Hollis (Greensboro, MD),  5) and sophomore Erica Nixon (Bronx, NY).

Stellah Sang will also compete in the 800 meter run. This will be Sang’s third appearance in a NCAA Championship for UDC.

UDC Head Track and Field Coach Marc J. Harrison says about his team’s NCAA appearance, “This is a great opportunity for the student-athletes and the University. It shows how hard work pays off. This will be the first time in the University’s history that that 4x400 meter relay team has qualified for the Championships. It will be great exposure for the University”. This will also be the third consecutive year that Coach Harrison will take individuals to national championship meets.
