WEST BABYLON, NY – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team swept the East Coast Conference women's tennis weekly awards this week as sophomore transfer Simoné Pärn earned Player of the Week and freshman Joanna Skrzypczynska earned Rookie of the Week.

Pärn and Skrzypczynska helped the Firebirds to consecutive regional non-conference wins by identical, 5-2 scores last week vs. USciences on Thurs., Sept. 27 and LeMoyne College on Sat., Sept. 29.

Pärn, an Estonia native, earned two No. 1 singles and two No. 1 doubles victories last week. In singles play, she shook off a first set loss to USciences' Karla Miletic to win, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, and then she won in convincing fashion vs. LeMoyne's Tiffany Hamdan, 6-3, 6-2. Pärn is 6-1 overall and 5-0 in dual matches this season in singles play.

She also teamed up with junior transfer Marija Milic to beat Miletic and Danielle Paran of USciences, 6-1, and Hamdan and Birdem Oz of LeMoyne, 6-0. Pärn and Milic are 6-1 overall and 5-0 in dual match play.

Skrzypczynska was equally successful this past week at the No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles positions. In singles play, she bested USciences' Paran, 6-4, 6-3, and grinded out a tough win over LeMoyne's Caroline St. Antoine, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.  Skrzypczynska is 5-2 overall in singles play this season, including a 4-1 mark in dual matches.

In doubles play, she teamed with Anastasiia Danylova for a 6-1 win vs. USciences, and a 6-4 win at LeMoyne. Skrzypczynska and Danylova are 6-1 overall at No. 2 doubles this year, including a 5-0 mark in dual match play.

The Firebirds (4-1) will take on non-regional opponent Millersville on the road Wed., Oct. 3 at 2 p.m., and then they will return home and to ECC play with a match vs. Daemen College on Sat., Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.
