Firebirds Cruise to 2nd Straight Win, 5-2 vs. USciences

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's tennis team earned a decisive, 5-2 win vs. USciences in NCAA Division II non-conference play Thursday afternoon at Southeast Tennis & Learning Center.

The Firebirds, winners of their 2nd straight dual match and first non-conference match of the season, improved to 3-1 overall. USciences, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) had its two-match win-streak snapped today as the Devils fell to 2-2 overall.

UDC claimed the doubles point via wins at No. 1 and 2 doubles, as both Firebird tandems of Simoné Pärn and Marija Milic as well as Anastasiia Danylova and Joanna Skrzypczynska remain unbeaten in dual match play.  Pärn and Milic earned a resounding, 6-1 win at No. 1 vs. Karla Miletic and Danielle Paran, as did Danylova and Skrzypczynska over Elkanah Linder and Stephanie Mazurek at No. 2.

Estefania Castrillon came through with the first singles point of the day as she defeated Julia James, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6. Milic followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win vs. Abbygail Gamarnik at No. 2, and Skrzypczynska then clinched the match victory with a hard-fought, 6-4, 6-3 win vs. Paran.

In other singles action after UDC had already clinched the victory, Paula Avellan and Danylova were each narrowly defeated in three sets at No. 4 and 5, respectively. Pärn closed out the match with a stunning, come-from-behind three-set win over Miletic, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, as she remains unbeaten at No. 1 in dual match singles play this season.  

Next up, the Firebirds travel north to Syracuse, NY to take on LeMoyne College on Sat., Sept. 29 at 12 p.m.
