Close Contest as the Firebirds Fall 19-8

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team fought in a close battle with Nyack College to lose, 19-8 on Tuesday afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.

The Firebirds (1-7, 0-3 ECC) put in a solid performance leading at times in the 1st half to eventually let slip a 5-4 lead to fall to a final score of 19-8. UDC was led by freshman Shemara Jefferson who took four goals off eight shots, and she was assisted in her efforts by captains Kianna Franklin and Amy Rock, with Franklin getting three goals and one assist, and Rock taking one goal and three assists.

Nyack College were headed by Tori Silvers who took an incredible game high of nine goals and five assists and she was supported by Jocelin Wright with three goals and two assists to give the visitors the eventual win.

The 1st half was a close battle that saw the Firebirds take the lead through a fine combination by Franklin and Jefferson for the latter to score. Despite Nyack clawing their way back into the match to even the score, they were tested by the resolute District of Columbia, with Franklin scoring twice to give the home side a 3-2 advantage. Again, their opponents hit back but a goal by Rock and another by Franklin gave the Firebirds a 5-4 lead midway through the half.

Tori Silvers scored three of her goals for Nyack to give them a 7-5 lead and finished the half up 9-5 . The 2nd half started much like the end of the 1st half with the Warriors taking another six goals before Jefferson scored to make it 15-6, and she went on to score another two in the half.

The Firebirds created more turnovers than their opponents (9-6) and almost won the same amount of draw controls losing 14-12.

UDC will be in action again when they travel to Post University, Friday, April 6th at 2PM.
