Firebirds Impress With 16-9 Victory Over Ohio Valley

FAIRMONT, WV - The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team were in inspired form yesterday as they earned their 1st victory of the season in a 16-9 win against Ohio Valley on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Firebirds (1-1) gained their 1st win under new head coach Cassandra Haase with a convincing 16-9 victory over Ohio Valley. This win is the Firebird's highest scoring game in program history surpassing a 2016 win over Hollins 16-2. 

The win saw freshman Shemara Jefferson contribute five goals, two assists, and seven groundballs to lead the firebirds. She was followed by another high-scorer, junior midfielder Vanessa Valentine, who added five goals along with one assist, and six groundballs. 

Credit can certainly not be taken away from the District of Columbia's ability defensively with sophomore goalkeeper Jada Foy starting the game and making 10 saves off 13 shots to only concede three goals in the 1st half. UDC got off to a tremendous start when they scored two early goals, first through Valentine and then two minutes later by sophomore Ana Sanchez. The half was dominated by the Firebirds who ended the first period up 8-3 up. 

Ohio Valley competed valiantly in their efforts to stop the firebirds. Work was to be done by the Firebirds as their opponents scored first in the 2nd half. They were headed by the attack of Kayla Stewart with five of the nine goals and one assist, and she was supported by midfielder Emily Prentice on two goals and one assist. 

UDC tied with Ohio Valley on shots with 27 a piece, however the firebirds controlled the draw 19 to 6 over their opposition. 

The District of Columbia will play their 1st home game of the season Saturday, March 3rd against Nyack College, 1PM.
