UDC Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by Bridgeport, 16-4

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's lacrosse team was defeated by the University of Bridgeport, 16-4 in East Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at Woodrow Wilson High School.

The Firebirds (1-9, 0-4 ECC) were led offensively by freshmen Amy Rock and Vanessa Valentine, who scored a pair of goals each. With its four goals today, UDC's season total reached 51, surpassing its two-year total of 50 from 2014 and 2015.

Bridgeport (5-7, 1-5 ECC) had six different goal scorers, including six-point efforts by attacker Courtney Forry (five goals, one assist) and Abigail Benesh (four goals, two assists). The Purple Knights, as a team, put 17 of 23 shots on goal and were 3-of-4 on free-position shots.

Bridgeport's Megan Carney earned the complete game victory with five saves on nine shots faced, and junior goalkeeper Dani Falco had one save in the loss.

Rock gave UDC an early 1-0 lead when she scored a free position goal 1:30 into the action, but the Purple Knights answered with three straight goals and never looked back. Benesh had all four of her goals in the first half, and Forry also scored four of her five. Valentine would add a goal for UDC at 22:36, and Rock scored her 2nd goal at 7:30, but the Firebirds trailed 12-3 at halftime.

The Purple Knights scored the first three goals of the second half in a span of 7:07, and coasted to a 16-4 victory.

UDC will return to action on Thursday, April 21st with an ECC contest at Roberts Wesleyan.
