Firebirds Defeat Mavericks to Claim Conference Victory

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated the Mercy Mavericks 71-43 to claim their first Conference victory of the season, on Saturday afternoon at Victory Hall SC. This win was a team effort as UDC boasts scorers from nine players.  

 

Maya Thomas led the Firebirds with 23 points going 8-20 from the field and 7-16 from the three-point line. She also led with seven rebounds. Freshmen guards Latavia Jackson and Halia Ellis contributed 10 points apiece, followed by Danielle Harrington with nine. 

 

The Firebirds got off to a great start outscoring the Mavericks 16-4 holding them to only 8.3% from the field, in the first quarter. The second quarter saw some improvements offensively for Mercy, but it wasn't enough as UDC led by a 17-point deficit going into the half. 

 

The Mavericks came off the half fighting outscoring the Firebirds 19-17 and was led by Katie Wall who contributed eight of those points to help bring them back into contention. The Firebirds came back with a vengeance in the last quarter to score 23 points with Thomas sinking two three pointers and Jackson and Ellis sinking one each to help open up the gap to 28 points and claim victory.

 

Next up UDC (4-11, 1-3 ECC) will host Roberts Wesleyan in another ECC showdown on Friday January 17that 5:00pm.
