Tough Battle Against the knights leads to Firebird Defeat.

Washington, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team battled the Saint Rose Golden Knights, but eventually fell 77-64 in their first game of the new year on Friday afternoon at the UDC Gymnasium. This loss saw the Firebirds fall to a 3-11 record overall while the Golden Knights improved to 5-7. 

Maya Thomas led the Firebirds offensively with 18 points, going 7-21 from the field and sinking four three pointers. UDC had three other Firebirds come shy of double figure scoring including Latavia Jackson, Halia Ellis, and Hunter Rowson who put up nine points each. Rowson, in her first game back since November also came off the bench to lead the team with eight rebounds. 

The First and second quarters saw the Firebirds going head to head with the Golden Knights. Saint Rose outscored UDC 20-18 in the first quarter, but the Firebirds came back to outscore them 16-15 in the second. The third quarter is where the Golden Knights were able to pull away outscoring UDC 22-12, going 80% from the field while holding UDC to just 25%. The Firebirds fought their way back scoring 18 points in the last quarter, but it wasn't enough to close the deficit, as Saint Rose ultimately got the win 77-64.

Next up UDC will travel to New York to face off against conference foe Mercy College on Saturday January 11th
