Firebirds Edged Out by the Purple Knights 68-64

Bridgeport, Conn- Senior Tyra Coombs exploded at the three-point line going 5-10 and totaled a season high 21 points to lead the Firebirds offensively. Unfortunately, UDC eventually fell 68-64 against Bridgeport University, Wednesday evening at the Hubbell gym. With this loss the Firebirds fell to 0-2 in conference play while the Purple Knights improved to 1-0.

Coombs (21 points) and freshman guard Latavia Jackson (16 points) combined for a total of 37 points to make up more than half of the Firebirds overall points. Jackson grabbed a team high nine rebounds barely missing out on a double-double. 

First quarter: Coombs came out blazing scoring 13 points, going 3-4 at the three-point line and 5-7 from the field. The Firebirds totaled 26 points to lead the Purple Knights 25-15 going into the second quarter.

Second quarter: Both teams were even, scoring 12 points apiece with Jackson leading UDC with four points going a perfect 2-2 from the field. Bridgeport was able to draw a few fouls, where they went 6-10 from the free throw line and ultimately leaving the Firebirds in some potential foul trouble. The Firebirds were still able to lead by 11 points going into half time.

Third Quarter: Bridgport picked up some momentum outscoring UDC 18-16, with a 46.7 shot percentage from the field. While the Purple Knights were able to bring down the deficit to single digits, they still trailed behind the Firebirds 54-45 going into the last quarter.  

Fourth Quarter: With multiple key players in foul trouble UDC had to tread lightly, which the Purple Knights were able to capitalize off of. Bridgeport's Jaqualah Holliman erupted with ten points going a perfect 2-2 from the three-point line, 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. The Knights scored 23 points going 72.7 shot percentage from the field while holding UDC to just 11.8%. In the end the Firebirds were edged out by four points giving the Purple Knights a win in their conference opener of the season.
