Firebirds Fall to Nationally Ranked Crimson Hawks in Low Scoring Game

Washington, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to Indiana (pa.), who is ranked 13thin the country, 39-34 on Tuesday evening, at the UDC Gymnasium. UDC fell to 3-6 on the season while IUP improved to 7-1.

In what turned out to be a low scoring game, UDC Latavia Jackson, Tyra Coombs and Maya Thomas each registered a team high seven points. Jackson also led the Firebirds with eight rebounds and three steals. The Crimson hawks were led by Rajah Fink who put up a game high 10 points and five steals. 

While the game was slow offensively, both teams perhaps had their best defensive game of the season. UDC held IUP to a 22.6 shot percentage from the field conceding 39 points, while IUP held UDC to a 20.0 shot percentage from the field conceding only 34 points. 

The First quarter saw the Crimson Hawks pulling away from the Firebirds 12-6 after an 8-0 run. The second quarter saw them opening up the gap by 10 points but UDC managed to close that deficit by only six points to end the half. 

It wasn't until the last quarter that the Firebirds were able to outscore the Crimson Hawks 9-8, but it wasn't enough, as they fell short 39-34.

Next up the Firebirds will host Molloy college in their Conference season opener on Saturday December 7that 1:00pm.
