Firebirds Soar Past the Bloomfield Bears to a 64-40 Victory

Washington DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team defeated the Bloomfield Bears 64-40, to clinch their second victory of the season. The Firebirds improved 2-4 while the Bears fell to 0-7 on the season. 

The Firebirds had three starters score in the double figures with Latvia Jackson leading the pack with 15 points and eight rebounds. She was followed up by teammates Hunter Rowson who scored a season high 14 points and Maya Thomas with 13. 

First Quarter: Both teams were having some trouble offensively with the Firebirds going 5-18 from the field and the Bears 3-12 from the field. Hunter and Jackson led the field going 4 points apiece to help the Firebirds take the lead going into the second quarter.

Second Quarter: The duet of Rowson and Jackson led the Firebirds to a 61.5% shooting from the field, with both players putting up 6 points. Bloomfield also improved offensively but UDC held on to the lead going into halftime 31-22. 

Third Quarter: Both teams fell off offensively with the Firebirds going 4-15 and the bears going 2-12 from the field. The Firebirds were able to open the lead up to 11 points going into the final quarter.

Fourth Quarter: The scoreboard was at a standstill for the first couple of minutes with neither team able to sink one in the net. A layup by Rowson at 7:55 extended the Firebirds lead to 13 points. Jaylah bennet broke the bears shooting drought after sinking two free throws at 5:42. Tyra Coombs making her season debut was able to sink a shot from the three-point line and went 1-1 at the free throw line to help lead the Firebirds to a 64-40 victory over the Bears.

Next up the Firebirds are on the road to face off against Division II rival Bowie State, on Wednesday November 27, at 5:30pm.
