Firebirds Fall to the Owls 64-51, in Home Opener

Washington, DC- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to Southern Connecticut 64-51 in their home opener at the UDC Sports Complex Gym, on Saturday afternoon. The Firebirds fell to 1-3 on the season while the Owls improved 4-0 and remains.

Junior guard, Maya Thomas led the Firebirds with 22 points. Teammate Danielle Harrington put up a season high 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

The Firebirds took an early lead over the Owls to lead 5-3 a little over five minutes into the game. After a back and forth the Owls were able to take the lead after a jump shot was made by Imani Wheeler. The last three minutes saw the Owls outscoring the Firebirds 6-0 to open a lead 17-10 going into the second quarter. Southern Connecticut managed to pull away from UDC during the second quarter, extending the lead to 12 points going into the half.

Firebirds had their highest scoring period in the third quarter with Thomas and Harrington contributing seven and five points each. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to close the deficit as the Owls also had their highest scoring period putting up 19 points. The last quarter heated up as freshman standout Latavia Jackson scored seven out of her game high 11 points. 

Next up UDC (1-3) will travel to Delaware to face off against Holy Family at 7:00 PM.
